Not so into the ultrasound

We had a follow-up u/s yesterday (at 28 weeks) because the 20-week one showed that the placenta was a little low. I was really looking forward to seeing the little niblet, but it wasn't actually that great. The baby seems totally fine. That's obviously the big thing.

But the baby was hanging out in a full pike position, so the technician kept thumping on my belly with the transducer to try to get the baby to stretch out. STOP HARASSING THE BABY! She did it again when she wanted the baby to unclench its fists. J and I didn't say anything when she was going for anatomical images, but as soon as she said, "I'm trying to get a good 3-D picture for you" we both started saying "That's OK. We don't need one. It's fine. The baby must be comfortable there." We just said it over and over until she gave up.

The only 3-D image we got is actually pretty funny. It's just a forehead, a hand (poised for a terrorist fist-bump), and a foot, with the toes pointing (improbably) inward toward the top of the head. It's at least as charming to me as a classic head shot.

The thumping sonographer reminds me of a story my father tells about after my brother was born. The nurse was remarking to dad about what a deep voice my brother had. To demonstrate, she flicked the back of his ear to make him cry. WHAT THE HELL?!? My dad wanted to punch her lights out.

Before the appointment, I was thinking, with a little sadness, that this would be the last time we get to see the baby until birth. But now I'm glad to not have any more scans scheduled. I want to let this kid gestate in peace!

  1. Oh My! the poor baby! I would have wanted to scream at the tech to leave my baby alone too!

Glad everything is ok and that you're on track :)

Happy Thanksgiving! Eat lots for your Canadian friends, would ya?

  2. This reminds me of a story my friend told me. Her baby was also bumped around and prodded during the ultrasound and when they left, her husband said he was convinced the baby must be a girl - cause he felt so protective of her and wanted to punch the tech. (I guess he doesn't think he'd be so protective of a little boy!) Glad the little pike is doing well!

  3. That's hilarious. I think the picture you walked away with is going to mean a whole lot more than any "head shots" they would have gotten by irritating your little one. A peaceful gestation is no little thing!

  4. Oh, poor fetus! There's also the part where she was thumping on you! Like, you're a PERSON TOO!

  5. Haha...poor baby.

That story your dad tells, though? I would've been so pissed!

  6. Poor little glowworm, just trying to rest up for his/her debut! Are you still going to learn the sex of the baby on Christmas?
