We went for an ultrasound last Thursday, because the one performed at 28 weeks showed that the kid measured in the 86th percentile for size. (We were sent for one at 28 weeks, because the one at 20 weeks made it seem like my placenta might be low - it wasn't). This last week (the 35th) he measured in the 90th percentile -- his weight was estimated at 7.2 lbs! This is quite a bit more than the 5.5 pounds that What to Expect says for 35 weeks. Estimates by ultrasound can be off, but this is the second one where he measured big, so I think it's probably generally accurate. Both the sonographer and the doula (more on that later) said that he'd probably be about 9 lbs at birth.
On the one hand, it makes me feel a little better about the weight I've gained. Above-average weight gain makes sense for a bigger-than-average baby. On the other hand, my internal mother-guilt voice is saying that I ate too many sweets, and I've made a porker out of him in a sort of not-quite-diabetic-but-insulin-resistant way. I should probably nip this mother-guilt thing in the bud.
I'm actually not too freaked out about birthing a bigger baby. J and his dad are both 6 foot or taller. My dad and brother are both 6'4", so I'd expect a baby of ours to be on the big side. I'm 5'8" and think of myself as being of sturdy, peasant build. I think me and my hoo-ha can deal with a nine-pounder.
J on the other hand is pleased. He says he thinks of a big baby as healthy. And he's having all sorts of fun referring to the baby as "Moose."
At my last OB appointment (before the U/S) my Dr said that Moose doesn't seem too squished in utero, so she was doubting that he was all that big. I'm a little worried that now she's going to start talking about inducing labor. I would resist that mightily. My next appointment is Tuesday, so we'll see what she says. I may be getting my hackles up for nothing. She mentioned that she (at 5'4") had a 10-pound baby vaginally.
In other news, we got a doula! We met with two of them, and one was a clear standout. She's also a certified lactation counselor AND (be still my heart) a licensed massage therapist. We felt really good about her.
In other, other news, my awesome parents came for a visit this weekend to help us prep the house. Me and mom stripped wallpaper from the baby room, and Dad and J (acting on a suggestion of a friend of mine who used cloth diapers) installed kitchen sprayers in the two bathrooms (using the toilet supply line) so that we can spray baby poop off the diapers before tossing them in the pail. The sprayers are surprisingly powerful. Comical mishaps may ensue. The sprayers may prove to be a bad idea.
WHOA, a nine pounder?!? WHOA. I would be a little freaked, but like you I'd think I could do it somehow, after all, my mom had a nine pound 10 oz baby boy (my younger brother) vaginally and she's only 5'6. I'm taller sturdier at 5'10...but that was her 3rd child, so who knows.
ReplyDeleteAwesome on all the baby room prep!
so glad all is going well. You are cetainly taking it all in stride which is great :)
ReplyDeletewishing you so much luck and love in the days and weeks ahead.
Moose! I love it! I don't think your eating habits can take credit for this big baby - I think the extra calories generally go into what the books so kindly refer to as "maternal fat stores", at least that was the case for me :) So no mother guilt allowed - he's just a nice, healthy baby. We're using cloth diapers too, but opted to use liners with them. The liners look a bit like a diaper-size piece of paper towel that can be flushed, poop and all, when you change the diaper. I really look forward to hearing about your adventures with the sprayer! Oh, and a doula with massage skills?? Lucky, lucky you.
ReplyDeleteHooray for a big, healthy baby!
ReplyDeleteWay to get all prepared, too. The sprayers sound handy and dangerous all at once.
Ha ha, the sprayers sound fun!! Or... well...
ReplyDeleteAnd a big baby-- maybe he'll come early on his own! You can hope anyways.
I look forward to hearing about the poop geysers. But that's a very clever idea! I used to deal with my little brother's diapers and am looking forward to hearing about all the innovations since those days (20+ years ago!).
ReplyDeleteI will think of your GIANT BABY any time I'm feeling sorry for myself about needing c-section. Yikes. My nethers quiver.
I'm from a culture that equates big baby with healthy baby:) Given his genetic predisposition to height, I bet he's just made this way. And I love the fact that J calls him Moose:)
ReplyDeleteA 9lber makes perfect sense considering all of the big/tall men you have in both of your families! Hopefully it won't be all 'head' weight. :-)YAY on the Doula!! He/She will be great support, a wealth of knowledge and a provider of kind TLC for both you and J during the whole process. I giggle at the sprayers. When we install ours on the toilet I can see some Halle mischief heading our way!
ReplyDeleteI'm digging this update, Amy! You sound great! :) You're right on the u/s weight approximations--they are typically a bit off. I can't tell you how many moms I've worked with where she was sectioned for macrosomia, only for the baby to be a modest 7-8ish lbs at birth. Either way, your hoo-ha can totally handle it, girl. Prenatal perineal massage might also be something to consider...
ReplyDeleteSo stoked to hear you found a doula you really like! I loved mine--she also did postpartum visits, so that was handy with the breastfeeding learning curve, for sure.
I've been checking out the sprayer, too. We've been trying out various cloth diaper systems--gDiapers, GroVia, and bumGenius. Both the gDiapers and GroVias use hybrid flushable/compostable disposable inserts, so that's what we've been practicing with lately. We haven't actually tried the cloth inserts yet--we're still trying to establish a routine/rhythm, and I'm a little leary to throw some extra coordination in there just yet. We'll see!
So excited for you!
So glad to see this update! I am LOVING the name, "Moose." That is hysterical! So I definitely don't think you should be concerned about your weight gain. An estimated 9 lbs is a lot of baby. And just so you know I have a friend that is 5'3," had 2 IVF babies and both were over 9 lbs. She was concerned about her weight gain, but the babies were healthy and she took her weight off in no time. Can't wait to hear more soon!!!
ReplyDeleteThose u/s can be off by a couple pounds, so try not to worry too much. I'm sure "Moose" is doing just fine at whatever weight he is :).
ReplyDeleteLove the name, too - hilarious!
